Get Marketo Certified - Step 5: Watch the wording

A big problem for first-time takers of the Marketo Certified Expert exam is terminology and wording. Many times the question will have identical answers, with only one word difference. If you aren’t careful, it’s easy to select the wrong answer.

A big problem for first-time takers of the Marketo Certified Expert exam is terminology and wording. Many times the question will have identical answers, with only one word difference.

If you aren’t careful, it’s easy to select the wrong answer. Here’s an example:

A marketer ran a program and did not assign a program status with success. The marketer now wants to run a program performance report to find the cost per success for the program. What will occur?

  1. The report will return an error for cost per success.
  2. The report will return a null value for cost per success.
  3. The report will identify the last program status as a success and calculate based on that.
  4. The report will identify the first program status as a success and calculate based on that.

If you’re feeling rushed, underprepared, or simply aren’t attentive, these questions will trip you up.

Here’s another multiple choice question:

A marketing manager needs to gate a piece of content on the company website. Which three channel and program types correspond to this activity?

  1. An Email program with the channel "Email"
  2. A Default program with the channel "Email"
  3. An Event program with the channel "Web Form"
  4. A Default program with the channel "Content"
  5. A Default program with the channel "Web Form"
  6. A Default program with the channel "Web Content"
  7. An Engagement program with the channel "Web Content”

So, what’s your strategy here? We can do a few things to ensure success:

    Study prep:

    • Be sure to memorize Marketo terminology and understand the meanings and context of each term.
    • Build in time daily or weekly to memorize terms if needed.
    • Flashcards could be helpful.

    Day of the test:

    • Be well rested at test time. If you’re going to the Marketing Nation summit, don’t party the night before your test.
    • Eliminate distractions: wear comfortable clothes, be hydrated, use the restroom before your test starts.
    • Treat the question like a math word problem. (2 trains leave stations at 12:00. Penelope is eating an apple in the dining car of Train A. When will…) Look at key words and phrases in the question and answer.
    • Reserve 10 minutes of your test for review. Go back and re-read the questions before pushing the ‘submit test’ button.

To get the best test results, make sure you:

    • Reserve a portion of each day’s study to reviewing terminology
    • Take the test well-rested and distraction free
    • Focus on key phrases in the exam question
    • Reserve time to review questions before submitting your test
